Commissioned by the National Museum of Australia in 2018 to design and manufacture a custom point of sale unit and accompanying card wall, taking inspiration from my Fragment sculpture series, for their major re-fit of their retail store.
The point of sale unit is custom made by hand in stainless steel featuring my unique patina finish.
The card wall comprises of stainless steel shelving with a fibreglass reinforced concrete backdrop, featuring tonal panels with a shadow line, linking the wall to the main point of sale unit.
Twig Shelf
Victorian Ash, Stainless Steel, PVC
170 x 120 x 32cm
Twig is a collaborative prototype between designer makers Dan Lorrimer and Eliot Bastianon for the 2015 Tandem Project.
We aimed to create a piece of furniture that would for fill our design criteria, it had to work in small living spaces, be made from local and recyclable materials, be playful elegant and express the material it is made from. As a result Twig is a playful fully adjustable shelving storage solution for small living spaces, which utilises a versatile shelving system to display and house books, objects and the odd hat.
Each shelf is easily adjustable through its inbuilt locking system. Devoid of bulky brackets, it has a sense of weightlessness and open space, placing your books and objects in pride of place. The main support rails mimic tree branches or twigs giving it a playful appearance also highlighting the timbers original form.
Designed exclusively for the Centenary of Canberra – A Legacy of Good Design Competition, The Griffin Blueprint Dish was selected as one of five winning entries.
Designed and manufactured entirely in-house by industrial designer Mitchell Brooks and sculptor Dan Lorrimer under the name MAKEOUT Design. Just over 650 dishes were manufactured throughout Canberra’s centenary year – 2013.
The Griffin Blueprint dish pays homage to the original plans for Canberra by both Walter Burley Griffin and Marion Mahony Griffin.
The dish is sightly asymmetrical, mirroring the natural amphitheatre of the city, and the geometric design of the blueprint is aligned along axes aligned with topographical landmarks. The packaging further illustrates the layered consideration of the Griffin Blueprint dish – the drafting film that wraps around the box is a topographical map, through which the original axis map and geometry of the design can be seen.
The two original prototypes were acquired by the Legislative Assembly’s Centenary’s permanent art collection in Canberra.
The Griffin Blueprint Dish was a special project honouring the centenary of Canberra and is no longer in production.

Glass X Design
Canberra Glassworks
November 2014 - January 2015
A collaborative exhibition where designers and glass artists were asked to work in pairs joining intellect and skills to collaboratively produce a new product or suite of works.
The brief was open with the single practical direction given to keep their work small in physical scale. This cross disciplinary exhibition will include both established and emerging designers and glass artists from across Australia.
Dan Lorrimer and Mitchell Brooks (MAKEOUT Design) worked with glass artist Ruth Alllen.
The resulting work was three desk lamps combining glass light shades manufactured from recycled glass bottles alongside precision machined metalwork.
"Our interpretation of the brief was to design a lamp just as durable and functional as those used by machinists in the early part of the last century. We were inspired by the classic angle poise lamp, adaptable and popular in both lounge room and machine-shop alike, and retort stands used in chemistry experiments, for the simplicity of their design." Excerpt from the artistic statement by MAKEOUT Design.
A collaboration between Dan Lorrimer and Thor Diesendorf.
The 4590 Table + Stools made from reclaimed Ash ceiling joists and stainless steel. Thor & Dan Lorrimer designed these pieces together with the intention that both materials contribute equally to the structure.
The set of three is being auctioned as part of Design Canberra’s Design. Auction. Party. 2019
